How to recognise languages by their sound

Romance languagesSpanish and Italian sound clear and full of vowels; Italian has many double consonants, Spanish many words ending in “s”. French sounds nasal and flowing, Portuguese soft with lots of “sh” sounds.
Germanic languagesDutch has the throaty “ch” (as in Scottish “loch”), Swedish and Norwegian a sing-song melody. Danish sounds muffled, with many swallowed endings.
Slavic languagesPolish is full of hissing sounds (sz, cz, ś, ć). Russian and Ukrainian sound alike – Ukrainian has more “i” sounds and a soft “h” instead of “g”.
East Asian languagesChinese has tones: each syllable rises, falls or stays level. Japanese sounds even, in short syllables; Korean has more consonants at the end of syllables.
The lonersFinnish has very long words with double vowels. Turkish sounds even because of vowel harmony. Greek has the lisped “th”, Arabic deep sounds from the throat.
