Old German Script Generator: Convert Text to Sütterlin, Kurrent or Fraktur

Type a name or text, choose a script and save it as an image or PDF. Family historians use it to see how a surname looks in old script. In the other direction, the text recognition reads printed Fraktur from a photo or scan.

Tip: type an ancestor's name to see how it looks in the old script, then look for that shape in the record. If an s comes out wrong, type ſ or s in the word yourself; words that already contain an ſ stay as they are.

Read Fraktur: turn a photo or scan into modern letters

Upload a photo from an old book or newspaper, and the recognition writes the text out in modern letters.

Recognition runs in your browser; your image is not uploaded. It reads printed Fraktur from books, newspapers and certificates, and the text comes out in German. Words marked like this are uncertain. It cannot read handwriting in Kurrent or Sütterlin. It works best with a straight, sharp crop of one text column. Recognition model: frak2021 from Mannheim University Library, text recognition: Tesseract.

How the generator works

The generator sets your text in one of three scripts: Sütterlin and Kurrent are old German handwriting, and Fraktur is the blackletter type of old books. On request it sets the long ſ, which is meant for German words; in English text you may want to switch it off.

For the other direction, there is the text recognition: it reads printed Fraktur from a photo or scan and outputs the text in modern letters. It cannot read handwriting in Sütterlin or Kurrent. To decipher an old letter, the quickest way is our reading trainer.

A printed model, not real handwriting

Someone writing with a pen formed each letter differently depending on the one before it, and many letters looked different at the start of a word than at the end. Our fonts have one form for each letter, as in a school copybook. The result looks more even than real handwriting, so use it to learn the shapes rather than to expect an exact match in a record.

The image, as a PNG with an optional transparent background or as an A4 PDF for printing, is created right in your browser, and your text is not uploaded. For longer texts or your own documents, download the fonts for free.

Frequently asked questions about the generator

Can I use the images freely?
Yes, you can use the images privately and commercially, for example for family trees, invitations or labels.
Does it also translate old handwriting into modern text?
Not handwriting yet. The text recognition on this page reads printed Fraktur from books and newspapers from a photo or scan. For letters in Sütterlin or Kurrent, use the free reading trainer on the Old German Script page.
Is my photo uploaded for text recognition?
No. Recognition runs entirely in your browser; the first time, it downloads about 4 MB once. Your image and the recognized text do not leave your device.
Can I also convert text to Fraktur?
Yes. Just choose Fraktur under “Script”. The generator then sets the blackletter type with the long s and the typical ligatures ch, ck and tz.
Why does the e look like an n?
That is correct: in German handwriting, the lowercase e has two short points and resembles an n. The n in turn looks like our u, which is why the u carries a curve.
