How numbers work in Bulgarian
The numbers 0 to 10 are нула, едно, две, три, четири, пет, шест, седем, осем, девет, десет. From 11 to 19 you add -надесет: единадесет, дванадесет … деветнадесет. In speech you will almost always hear the short forms единайсет, дванайсет, петнайсет.
The tens end in -десет: двадесет, тридесет, четиридесет, петдесет, шестдесет, седемдесет, осемдесет, деветдесет. Short forms are common here too: двайсет, трийсет. Unlike Russian, the unit is joined with и (and): двадесет и едно, четиридесет и пет.
Among the hundreds, 200 and 300 are двеста and триста, and from 400 the ending is -стотин: четиристотин, петстотин. A thousand is хиляда, and from 2,000 хиляди: две хиляди, десет хиляди. A million is един милион.
When counting you say едно and две. Before a noun, one agrees in gender (един стол, една книга, едно дете), and so does two (два стола, две книги). Groups of men take special forms such as двама мъже and трима приятели.
The ordinals up to ten are първи, втори, трети, четвърти, пети, шести, седми, осми, девети, десети. They behave like adjectives and take the suffixed article: първият ден.
