How numbers work in Ukrainian
The numbers 0 to 10 are нуль, один, два, три, чотири, п’ять, шість, сім, вісім, дев’ять, десять. From 11 to 19 you add -надцять: одинадцять, дванадцять, тринадцять … дев’ятнадцять.
The tens 20 and 30 end in -дцять (двадцять, тридцять), and 50 to 80 in -десят (п’ятдесят, шістдесят, сімдесят, вісімдесят). Сорок (40) and дев’яносто (90) are irregular. The unit follows as a separate word: двадцять один, сорок п’ять.
Among the hundreds, 200 is двісті, 300 and 400 are триста and чотириста, and from 500 the ending is -сот: п’ятсот. A thousand is тисяча, then дві тисячі and п’ять тисяч. A million is мільйон.
Один and два agree in gender: один стіл, одна книжка, одне вікно; два столи, дві книжки. After два, три and чотири the noun is in the nominative plural, from п’ять in the genitive plural: три роки, п’ять років.
The ordinals up to ten are перший, другий, третій, четвертий, п’ятий, шостий, сьомий, восьмий, дев’ятий, десятий. Note the apostrophe in п’ять and дев’ять: it separates the consonant from the following я.
