How numbers work in Finnish
The numbers 0 to 10 are nolla, yksi, kaksi, kolme, neljä, viisi, kuusi, seitsemän, kahdeksan, yhdeksän, kymmenen. From 11 to 19 you add -toista (literally 'of the second ten'): yksitoista, kaksitoista … yhdeksäntoista.
The tens use -kymmentä, the partitive of kymmenen: kaksikymmentä (20), kolmekymmentä (30), yhdeksänkymmentä (90). The unit is attached directly: kaksikymmentäyksi (21), viisikymmentäviisi (55). The words get long but are completely regular.
Hundreds and thousands work the same way: sata (100), kaksisataa (200), tuhat (1,000), kaksituhatta (2,000). A million is miljoona. Spoken Finnish shortens numbers heavily: yks, kaks, kolkyt (30), kakskytyks (21).
After numbers from two upwards the noun goes into the partitive singular: kaksi kirjaa (two books). Numbers themselves are also declined like nouns, for example kolmessa (in three).
The ordinals up to ten are ensimmäinen, toinen, kolmas, neljäs, viides, kuudes, seitsemäs, kahdeksas, yhdeksäs, kymmenes.
