How numbers work in Swedish
Swedish has separate words for 0 to 12: noll, ett, två … elva, tolv. From 13 to 19 the numbers end in -ton: tretton, fjorton, femton, sexton, sjutton, arton, nitton.
The tens end in -tio: tjugo, trettio, fyrtio, femtio, sextio, sjuttio, åttio, nittio. In speech the final o is often dropped (tretti, fyrti), and fyrtio is pronounced 'förti'.
The ten comes first and everything is written as one word: tjugoett, trettiofem, nittionio. When counting, one is ett; before a noun it is en or ett depending on gender: en bil, ett hus.
Hundra and tusen are usually said without ett: hundra, tusen, tvåhundra, tvåtusen. A million is en miljon, plural två miljoner.
The ordinals up to ten are första, andra, tredje, fjärde, femte, sjätte, sjunde, åttonde, nionde, tionde. Eleven and twelve add -te (elfte, tolfte); 13 to 19 and the tens end in -nde (trettonde, nittonde, tjugonde).
