How do you use können for a past ability?

The rule

To describe a past ability, duty or intention, you often use konnte, musste or wollte. These forms come from können, müssen and wollen. A second verb stays in its basic form at the end, just as with modal verbs in the present. The form changes with the person: ich konnte, du konntest, wir konnten. The course contains no real sentences with these past forms, so the table shows them separately.

Remember: Können → konnte, müssen → musste, wollen → wollte.

What differs for you

English could, had to and wanted to give you the meanings of past ability, duty and intention. German expresses them with konnte, musste and wollte, but changes the form for each person: “ich konnte”, “du konntest”. A second verb remains at the end in its base form. Also keep “konnte” separate from “könnte”, which can express a possibility or polite request.
