Infinitive constructions with 'zu' replace subordinate clauses.

The rule

Infinitive constructions with 'zu' replace subordinate clauses. 'um...zu' expresses a purpose (why?), 'ohne...zu' a missing accompanying action, '(an)statt...zu' an alternative. With separable verbs, 'zu' goes between the prefix and the verb: einzukaufen. 'um...zu' + infinitive expresses the purpose: Ich spare, um ein Auto zu kaufen. 'ohne...zu' + infinitive: without an action: Er ging, ohne zu bezahlen. '(an)statt...zu' + infinitive: alternative: Statt zu schlafen, liest sie. With separable verbs, 'zu' goes between the prefix and the verb: anzufangen, einzukaufen. The subject in the main clause and in the infinitive construction must be the same.
