The rule

Use nicht to make an action or statement negative: Ich fühle mich nicht gut. Its position depends on what you deny; it often appears before that part. With a noun that would have ein or no article, you often use kein: kein Ticket, keine Suppe. Kein takes endings like ein. Start by remembering the difference: nicht makes a statement negative, while kein goes with a noun.

What differs for you

English can negate a verb with not and use no before a noun, so the distinction has an anchor. German draws the line with “nicht” and “kein”, but their position and forms differ from English. In “nicht gut” and the other course questions, no noun is being given a negative article. Identify what is negated before choosing the German word.
