Why does “Ich hätte gern” sound more polite than a direct wish?

The rule

Hätte and könnte let you express a wish or request more gently. The course has Ich hätte gern das Tagesgericht. Here hätte is a polite form of haben. To ask another person, you can use könnten Sie; the course has the simpler form Können Sie mich bitte verbinden? The table shows forms for different people. Bitte also makes a question friendlier. Pay attention to the extra mark over the vowel in hätte and könnte.

What differs for you

English would like and could you soften a request, so the purpose of “ich hätte gern” and “könnten Sie” is familiar. German builds the polite form with its own verb shapes. One small vowel mark matters: “hätte” expresses a polite wish here, while “hatte” reports the past. With formal Sie, the matching form is könnten, not könnte.
