Reflexive verbs

Why is mich in “Ich freue mich auf das Wochenende”?

Take a look

The rule

With some verbs, a small word refers back to the person doing the action. In Ich freue mich auf das Wochenende, that word is mich. In Er ärgert sich über den Stau, it is sich. Learn the verb and this small word together: sich freuen, sich ärgern. The word changes with the person, as in ich freue mich and er freut sich. You cannot simply leave it out.

Remember: Learn these verbs with sich and change the small word for the person.

Goes with lesson 16, 19, 21 of the course.

What differs for you

English has reflexive words such as myself, so pointing back to the subject is familiar. German uses such a word with verbs where English may choose a different construction. In “Ich freue mich auf das Wochenende”, mich belongs with sich freuen and cannot simply disappear. Learn the German verb as a unit, then choose mich or sich for the subject.
