Passive voice

The passive voice is used when the action is more important than who performs it.

The rule

The passive voice is used when the action is more important than who performs it. It is formed with 'werden' + past participle. The process passive describes an ongoing action (is being made), the state passive a result (is made). Who performs the action can be named with 'von' + dative. Process passive, present tense: werden + past participle: Das Auto wird repariert. Process passive, simple past: wurde + past participle: Das Auto wurde repariert. Process passive, present perfect: ist + past participle + worden: Das Auto ist repariert worden. Who performs the action is indicated with 'von' + dative: Der Kuchen wird von meiner Mutter gebacken. State passive: sein + past participle (describes a result): Die Tür ist geöffnet.
