The rule
Reported speech conveys what someone has said. In everyday usage it is often formed with 'dass'-clauses or subjunctive I. Subjunctive I shows that you are conveying another person's words. When subjunctive I is identical to the indicative, subjunctive II is used instead. Reported speech with 'dass': Er sagt, dass er müde ist. (colloquially, the indicative is also possible). Reported speech with subjunctive I: Er sagt, er sei müde. (more formal, written language). Subjunctive I of 'sein': ich sei, du seist, er sei, wir seien, ihr seiet, sie seien. Subjunctive I of 'haben': ich habe, du habest, er habe, wir haben*, sie haben* (*→ subjunctive II: hätten). When subjunctive I = indicative, subjunctive II is used: sie kommen → sie kämen.
