Correlative connectors

Two-part connectors join parts of sentences or whole sentences in complex ways.

The rule

Two-part connectors join parts of sentences or whole sentences in complex ways. They express proportionality (je...desto), enumeration (sowohl...als auch), alternative (entweder...oder), exclusion (weder...noch), and qualified contrast (zwar...aber). Word order varies depending on the connector. 'je...desto/umso' + comparative: Je älter man wird, desto weiser wird man. (je-clause: verb at the end, desto-clause: verb in position 2 after desto + comparative). 'sowohl...als auch' joins equal parts: Sie ist sowohl intelligent als auch fleißig. 'entweder...oder' offers a choice: Entweder du gehst, oder ich gehe. 'weder...noch' excludes both: Er trinkt weder Kaffee noch Tee. 'zwar...aber' expresses a qualified contrast: Er ist zwar jung, aber erfahren.
