The rule

Extended participle constructions are typical of formal German texts. A participle appears with extensions (adverbs, objects, prepositional phrases) before the noun. They replace relative clauses and make texts more compact. They stand between the article and the noun. Extended participle = article + extension + participle + noun: der gut geschriebene Text. Present participle (active, simultaneous): der laut singende Vogel (= der Vogel, der laut singt). Past participle (passive, completed): das gestern geschriebene Buch (= das Buch, das gestern geschrieben wurde). The extension stands between the article and the participle: die in Deutschland lebenden Ausländer. Extended participles are declined like adjectives.
