The rule
German has different registers: colloquial speech (informal), standard language (neutral), and elevated language (formal). The choice of register depends on the situation. Words, grammar, and sentence structure differ by register. Choosing the right register is important for appropriate communication. Colloquial speech: shortened forms (hab, 'ne), slang, simple sentences, 'weil' with main-clause word order. Standard language: correct grammar, neutral word choice, subjunctive II for politeness. Elevated language: subjunctive I, passive, nominalizations, loanwords, complex sentence structures. At work and with strangers: standard or elevated language. With friends: colloquial speech. Style clashes (the wrong register for the situation) come across as inappropriate or funny.
